Phalaenopsis Facts

The most fun facts about Phalaenopsis

What's the difference between a Phalaenopsis and an orchid?
I could explain it like this: Phalaenopsis is my first name and orchid is my last name, the name of my family. Within my orchid family, I have many more brothers and sisters. But call me whatever you like; I respond to both!

Where are you from?
I'm from Southeast Asia. But you can also find my relatives in the Philippines. And even in Australia, they meet distant descendants of mine.

Where do you grow?
Phalaenopsis is an orchid that you mainly find in trees. There, we grow without getting the nutrients from the trees. No trees? Then my relatives and I prefer well-aerated soil, like humus and bark. And a spot on a rock or in a crevice is also fine. As long as it's near a river or stream.

How does an orchid actually grow?
We have roots, just like any other plant. Here, you'll find our roots neatly planted in a pot. In nature, we have "aerial roots": roots that aren't in the soil but that, for example, embrace a tree.

Where does that beautiful name come from?
Phalaenopsis actually means "like a moth." It's a name derived from two Greek words: "Phalaina" (moth) and "opsis" (resembling).

And how do you pronounce it?
It's faa-le-nop-sis. Not: faa-laa-ee-nop-sis!

How long does it bloom?
Our blooming period is very long: at least 60 days! And not to brag, but it sometimes lasts 180 days or more. At least you'll have plenty of time to enjoy our beautiful colors and patterns. Honestly, where else can you find flowers with a striped or speckled pattern?

Do you have to spend a lot of time in the greenhouse at Stolk Flora?
Yes, quite a bit. It takes a year for a cutting to grow into a flowering plant!

Is it also true that you diffuse a scent?
Well spotted! I mean: well smelled! Orchids give off a very light fragrance. You smell that scent best at sunrise. And did you know we even have a special scented line? The Parfum collection consists of fragrant orchids.

And watering?
On occasion. I don't like wet feet, just remember that. It's best to soak me in water for 5 minutes once a week and then take me out. They call that immersion. After immersion, I like to let it drain a bit.
